Top 10 Gymnastics Mats

Foldaing? Inflatable? For home? There are just so many options to choose from, right? Whether you are a gymnast that has just started tumbling or you have an experienced tumbler at home, picking the right mat is crucial. No matter the experience, gymnasts are constantly pushing their bodies to the limit—jumping, twisting, turning and flipping—and with all this comes the chance of injuries.

Because of this, the most important thing to consider when tumbling is safety. A good gymnastics mat will provide cushioning and protection while a gymnast practices, whether at home or at the gym. Therefore, finding a proper mat is a must.

According to the use the mat is going to have, there are some things a gymnast should consider, such as:

  1. Thickness. A mat that is excessively thin won’t provide enough cushioning and protection, should the gymnast fall during practice. However, a mat that is too thick will cause the gymnast’s hands or feet to sink into the mat, therefore making the practice of stunts harder. Standard mat thickness is about 1 3/8” thick.
  2. Mat dimensions. Mats are offered in a variety of different sizes, a gymnast should find one that fulfills their needs and allows them to practice their stunts on it.
  3. Tumbling runs. To do activities such as tumbling runs, a gymnast needs to get more than one tumbling mat. Most mats have a way to attach multiple mats end to end in order to elongate it.
